Who is Sadhguru? When it comes to spirituality, who doesn’t know Sadhguru? Jaggi Vasudev born in Mysore, Karnataka, India on 3rd September 1957 who is widely known as Sadhguru is much more than just a spiritual leader. His teachings are not only helpful on spiritual life, but in todays practical world as well.
He was the youngest of all four siblings. His father was an Ophthalmologist working under Indian Railways. At the age of 10 he learnt his first yoga asanas from Raghavendra Swami of Malladihalli.
Sadhguru had the first spiritual experience of his life on 23 September 1982 at Chamundi Hill, he was 25 back then. He rode to the hill and sat on a rock, and this is how he describes his experience:
Till that moment in my life I always thought this is me and that’s somebody else and something else. But for the first time I did not know which is me and which is not me. Suddenly, what was me was just all over the place. The very rock on which I was sitting, the air that I breathe, the very atmosphere around me, I had just exploded into everything. That sounds like utter insanity. This, I thought it lasted for ten to fifteen minutes but when I came back to my normal consciousness, it was about four-and-a-half-hours I was sitting there, fully conscious, eyes open, but time had just flipped.
After about 6 six weeks, he handed his business over to a friend and left to travel to understand more about the metaphysical experience he had. He then started his own yoga class with just 7 students in his hometown Mysore in 1983.
Sadhguru married his wife Vijaya Kumari (Vijji) in the year 1984. They have a daughter named Radhe Jaggi.
In 1992 he founded his own nonreligious, non-profit organisation in Coimbatore, India completely run by volunteers, the very well known Isha Foundation. They focus on meditation, yoga, tree planting and rural upliftment. The foundation offers yoga programs and courses under it’s branch Isha Yoga.
Other than India, Isha Foundation also serves in countries like United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, Lebanon and Malaysia with over 9 million volunteers all around the world.
Sadhguru has also been honoured with Padma Vibhushan(second highest civilian award in India) and Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar.
